Robocop, by Glu Mobile, is the official game of RoboCop the upcoming 2014 movie. If you’ve never seen any of the Movies I’ll give you a brief introduction to the franchise. You play as Alex Murphy, a good cop who is critically injured in the line of duty. The multinational conglomerate OmniCorp sees their chance for a part-man, part-robot police officer. Alex then joins the OmniCorp program to become RoboCop, the ultimate law enforcement officer. I use the term “join” pretty loosely here If I recall the movie correctly.
RoboCop is a simple cover-based shooter in which you play as the famous half mech half man, shooting lots of random thugs with your arsenal. You can choose which cover to hide behind, and sometimes you need to move to another waist-high wall or burning car because a sniper has his sights fixed on you.
The controls are pretty straight-forward: to aim swipe on the left side of the screen, then hold the right side to fire. Be careful though, just because you dropped a bad guy doesn’t necessarily mean he’s dead. Use Robocop’s scanner to survey the surroundings to find that some baddies that might have been wounded instead of killed.
At times the game seems a bit redundant. Each group of enemies winds up feeling very similar to the last, and stage settings repeat themselves quite often. You can’t move and shoot at the same time, you’re limited to just the one weapon per stage, and the story is non-existent for the most part. Between stages you get the opportunity to upgrade your armor and weapons. After every other mission finishes, RoboCop will say “thank you for your co-operation”. This did give me a taste of nostalgia at first but after a while it just became old.
Overall I didn’t hate the game, but I couldn’t fall in love with it either. Maybe I’m being a bit hard on it because I’m tired of all the reboot movies and this game is just receiving a little backlash. Let us know how you felt about RoboCop by commenting and rating the game below.
